ABSTRACT Acylated anthocyanins from a purple-fleshed sweet potato (PFSP), obtained by organic cultivation in Brazil, were characterized after separation by a high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-PDA). These anthocyanins were manually collected at the detector output, concentrated and injected into a high resolution mass spectrometer (ESI-QTOF-MS2). Twenty-two acylated anthocyanins were detected. Among them, sixteen had been reported in the literature and six, derived from peonidin were reported for the first time in sweet potato roots in this study. These compounds showed molecular ions with accurate mass/charge ratios (m/z) of 909.2081, 961.3010, 961.2571, 963.3345, 1123.2932 and 1179.3862. Although anthocyanins in PFSP have...

Allelopathic effects of Rhynchosia capitata on germination and seedling growth of mungbean Planta Daninha
Ali,H.H.; Tanveer,A.; Nadeem,M.A.; Javaid,M.M.; Kashif,M.S.; Chadhar,A.R..
Experiments were conducted to evaluate the allelopathic influence of Rhynchosia capitata on germination and seedling growth of mungbean (Vigna radiate) along with identification of the phytotoxic substances responsible for this activity. Water extracts of root, shoot, leaf, fruit and whole plant were prepared by soaking them in water in a ratio of 1:20 (w/v) for 24 h. All the extracts affected germination and seedling growth of mungbean, but higher inhibition was seen with R. capitata leaf water extracts. A linear decrease in the germination characteristics of mungbean was observed with the decrease in the concentration of leaf extract from 5% to 1%. The soil-incorporated residues (1-4% w/w) of R. capitata stimulated the growth of root and hypocotyl at low...

Ferreira,Peracio Rafael Bueno; Mendes,Cíntia Sorandra Oliveira; Rodrigues,Cínthia Gracielly; Rocha,Juliane Caroline Moura; Royo,Vanessa de Andrade; Valério,Henrique Maia; Oliveira,Dario Alves de.
In vitro tests conducted with extracts rich in tannins have identified several biological activities of this class of substance. Thus, this paper intends to evaluate the antibacterial activity of tannin-rich fraction obtained from leaf extracts of Anacardium humile A.St.-Hil. Extracts of A. humile leaves in 70% acetone were semi-purified with ethyl acetate and butanol. We quantified the total tannins of the semi-purified fractions, of the crude extract and of aqueous residues and then performed tests of the antibacterial activity of the tannins against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212. All positive extracts underwent tannin isolation using a Sephadex LH-20 column. The tannins isolated...

Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Activity in Leaves of Endemic and Native Isatis spp in Turkey BABT
Comlekcioglu,Nazan.
Abstract This study was undertaken to evaluate the health-promoting potentials of Isatis aucherii, Isatis buschiana, Isatis candolleana, Isatis tinctoria subsp. corymbosa and Isatis tinctoria. I. aucherii and I. candolleana are endemic, I. buschiana, I. tinctoria subsp. corymbosa are native in Turkey. While I. tinctoria is a well studied species, there is insufficient information about other endemic and native species. Therefore, this study is focused to reveal the bioactive compounds of poorly studied endemic and native species. In this context, protein, ash, glucosinolates, fatty acids, total phenolic and flavonoid content, and antioxidant activities were determined in leaf extracts. The highest protein and fatty oil contents were observed in I....

Effect of Blanching on Enzyme Activity and Bioactive Compounds of Blackberry BABT
Noreña,Caciano Zapata; Rigon,Renata Trindade.
ABSTRACT The inactivation of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase and the degradation of phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity in blackberry were investigated during blanching in water at 80-90 °C, and in steam, from 0 to 10 minutes. The enzyme kinetics indicated the presence of two isoenzymes with different thermal stability, following two-phase model, in which the reaction rate constant increased with increasing temperature for both the heat labile and heat resistant component. The phenolic compounds also followed a biphasic pattern, indicating a more heat resistant fraction, and the rate constants increased with increasing temperature. For the antioxidant activity and anthocyanins, the first order kinetic model (R2>0.982) indicated...
